Scenes from Upper Manhattan

Our photographers roamed through the Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods this week, documenting the natural beauty, street scenes and interesting characters.

The mission was to learn about the area by talking to people and exploring the region.

Here is what they saw.

Nia Engrassi wandered through Fort Tryon Park (above and below), where visitors experienced a peacefulness that seems so strange in the middle of one of the world’s great metropolitan areas.

Dariya Kozhasbay met a new arrival to Washington Heights (above), a tattooed person who moved here seven months ago. She also met with a man (below) who used to run a book business but now has his collections in his home.

Amanda Fernandez ventured down to Harlem, finding this beautiful mural (below) on 141st Street near Amsterdam.
