The Tastes of Upper Manhattan

Text and images by Mabel Liu.

The neighborhoods at the top of Manhattan have been dominated by Dominicans and their culture for the last few decades but there are also other cultures and cuisines to experience in the area.

Joanna Lozano (above), for example, is the owner of La Cabaña Salvadoreña, a Salvadoran restaurant on Broadway near 187th Street known for its pupusas, tamales and fruit juices.

Dominican cuisine remains the staple in neighborhoods like Washington Heights.

Steven Almanzar is a manager at La Casa Del Mofongo, a Dominican restaurant and bar at 1447 St. Nicholas Avenue.

Near that restaurant, you can find Las Habichuelas con Dulce, an outdoor stand that usually has a line of people waiting to be served, and cars double parked as people wait.
